THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT

THE GIFT FROM THE SISTERS - OR SOCK IT TO ME!

By Nancy Ware

It is Christmastime, 2017.  The three Webster sisters, Carol, Janet and Nancy, have tended to downplay Christmas of late, exchanging small gifts to commemorate the spirit but not going overboard. Janet’s birthday is on the second of January, so Carol and Nancy also take care to send along a birthday gift- making sure it isn’t wrapped in Xmas paper.  This particular year has taken on a life of its own weaving a fantastical plot along the way.

Carol was invited to a holiday party where each guest was asked to bring a wrapped present and they were going to have a white elephant exchange.  Carol found some adorable socks that she just loved and decided that would be a perfect gift to exchange.  She also bought some foot cream to go along with it.  Carol loved this gift so much that she called Janet to ask what the etiquette of white elephant exchanges were.  Would it be alright to take your own present home if you could swap for it?

Janet thought that might be a bit tacky and told Carol that it wasn’t really what is supposed to happen.  So Carol goes off to her party…  When the time comes to exchange gifts, Carol picks #12 out of 12!!  That’s terrific- because she would be the last to go and could get any gift she wanted!!  Yeah!  Well #9 picked Carol’s socks and #9 LOVED them!  She couldn’t stop raving about them and the other women also said they loved them.  Who brought them?  Where can we get some?  Carol kept silent.  She was also a bit dismayed as #9 was a good friend of hers and she really didn’t want to take the socks away from her.  But karma was on her side as #11 stole the socks, leaving Carol to take her pick.  She fessed up that the socks were hers and asked the group if it was okay if someone “stole” their own present.  “Oh yes, that’s fine,” was the response, so Carol took her socks from #10!

Carol wanted to let Janet know right away, so she called to tell her what had happened at the party.  Janet laughed and then said, “Well, that wouldn’t be a very good present for me.  I am so particular about socks.  I only like HUE and they have to be a certain height.  I usually get them at Macy’s but I can’t find them anymore.”

Carol and Nancy then get on the phone.  Carol is telling Nancy all about the above party and exchange and Janet’s comments.  Then Carol tells me, “Guess what?  I sent Janet those socks for her birthday!!!”

Nancy is apoplectic!!  Here’s why…

Recently the psoriasis on Nancy’s feet has been horrible.  Itchy, scaly, dry and bothersome.   So Nancy is our shopping and passes by this display of adorable furry socks with foot cream and thinks maybe that would be great for my psoriasis.  She looks at them and they really appeal to her, so she takes one for herself.  But then she thinks, Janet loves socks and is very proud of how smooth her feet are, I think I’ll get one of these for her birthday- so I do!  I have worn my socks to bed every night with the foot cream and my psoriasis has improved considerably, so I was thinking this is going to be great for Janet too!!

So you can imagine how I felt when Carol  told me that she, too, had gotten socks for Janet and Janet had said it would be a horrible present to give her!!

Then, just two days later, Loren and I went to Carol’s to see her tree and exchange presents.  Guess what I got from Carol?  SOCKS!!  The same socks she had brought to her gift exchange party.  And they were wonderful-  Heavy purple socks with snowflakes on them and a wonderful no-skid bottom.  No wonder her friends all wanted them.  I was thrilled… except now my “puny” socks with the foot balm that I had given to Janet for her birthday seemed quite pale in comparison.

So in a fit of total guilt and frustration, I went on line and found a HUE site and ordered Janet three HUE pairs of socks.  I had them sent to Tyler and I wrote him an email to tell him

what’s up and attached this story.  I have NO idea if they are the right height,                             but they are quite cute, and I hope that Janet will like them.  She will certainly

get a kick out of this story.  This has been the year of the sock with the Webster                         sisters.  What are the chances of two sisters each buying socks for their other                             sister for her birthday!  Amazing!

So Happy Birthday Dear Janet.  I can’t wait to see what you get for you birthday next year!!

PS to the story:  On Christmas morning I talked with Janet and she said, “Thank you for the HUE socks.  AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!  WHERE IS TYLER?  I was so upset!!  I had mailed Tyler the notice that the socks were on their way and in that email I said, “Remember- this is for her birthday NOT Christmas!  Thanks!”   So my plan of having Janet open first my original socks, then Carol’s socks then the HUE socks then having her read the story is foiled.  But after I calmed down, I realized that this SNAFU is just one more piece of the hilarious story of Janet’s 71st birthday!!

PPS:  I just found out yesterday that Carol gave her socks to Janet for Christmas NOT her birthday…  just one more glitch to this tale of woe.
